Bureau of Indian Standards id a leading certification authority in India for assurance of quality, safety and credibility of products among consumers. BIS come under Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, GOI. It was established on 23rd December 1986 under BIS Act, 1986.
BIS is a corporate body which consists of 25 members from central, state governments, industry, research institutions and organisations and headquartered in New Delhi. Bureau of Indian Standards also has regional offices in Kolkata, Chennai, Mumbai, Chandigarh, Delhi and 20 more places.
BIS is one of the largest certification bodies with 26500 licenses covering over 900 products. There are 90 products which mandatorily require BIS certification.

ISI BIS Certification
Before formation of BIS, the organisation was known as Indian Standards Institution (ISI). In 1986, BIS was established to handle ISI certification along with other product quality certifications. BIS undertakes the assessment of conformity of the products, services, systems and processes for ISI certification.

Hallmark BIS Certification
Hallmark is a certifying mark which assures the quality of gold and silver products. Hallmark is issued to the jewellery products after application for BIS certification. The gold and silver jewellery is tested for quality in the BIS labs through the various processes.
After complete testing and positive quality reports; BIS certification is issued to the jewellery products and they are permitted to use hallmark symbol.
