Necessity of FSSAI Act, 2006
Food is an essential commodity for human being. Thus this has also become a big market that is called food industry. There are a number of business players who claim stake in this business. These businesses include the fast food chains, food processing units, packaged food industry, meat shops, restaurants, hotels. Thus it makes it important for the country administration to devise a structure through which it can check the quality standards of food processed and delivered to ensure the safety and health of the common people who are consuming this food. It was base for FSSAI Act 2006 and food safety and standards regulations 2011.
Date of FSSAI Act, 2006
This necessity was the producer of Food Safety and Standards Act 2006. On 23rd August, 2006, FSSAI Act 2006 was passed by the parliament and it got assent of the honorable President of India. Along with the Food Act came into effect was food safety and standards regulations 2011 to regulate the food business in India.
Definition of FSSAI Act, 2006
Food Safety and Standards Act 2006 was enacted to consolidate the laws related to food and other eatable items and to establish the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) for laying down science based standards for articles of food and to regulate their manufacture, storage, distribution, sale and import, to ensure availability of safe and wholesome food for human consumption and for matters connected therewith or incidental thereto.
After execution of Food Safety and Standards Act 2006; it was necessary for a food business to apply for FSSAI license registration and get its product tested by the FSSAI food inspector. After the final approval of authority; the food item could be sold and delivered to public. If a food business carries out operations without FSSAI license, it is a punishable offence which can lead to penalty or prosecution as per the severity of the fault.

Food Safety and Standards Regulations 2011

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India has its headquarters at New Delhi with 6 regional offices located in Delhi, Guwahati, Mumbai, Kolkata, Cochin, and Chennai. It also has 14 referral laboratories notified by FSSAI, 72 State/UT laboratories located throughout India and 112 laboratories are NABL accredited private laboratories notified by FSSAI.

Type of FSSAI Food License
There are three types of food license issued to food business by Food Safety and Standards Authority of India on basis of turnover of business.
Basic Food License : For turnover less than 12 Lakhs
State Food License : For turnover between 12 lakh to 20 crores
Central Food License : For turnover more than 20 crores
